Liv Ingeborg Lied (here), taking as a starting point a recent article by Alin Suciu, has recently made some important remarks on 4 Ezra in Syriac. Here I would like to add a little about this text in Old Georgian. First, note these editions, with the sigla that I will use below:

The full book is available in AB, JB, and OJ. For these non-lectionary manuscripts, JB + AB ≈ OJ. Lied notes that parts of 4 Ezra appear in some Syriac lectionaries, and we see the same phenomenon in Georgian. The Georgian lectionary includes 5:22-30 and 8:6-36. For the verses as numbered in JL, which agree with the usual numbering, note:

The numbering in Blake’s editions differs from both of these and is produced as-is below.
As an example of the variety that we find in these texts, I offer a text sample of 4Ezr 5:22-30 according to JL, OJ, JB, and AB. (No judgement on textual primacy is necessarily implied in this order.) As usual when multiple textual versions are compared, various differences (grammatical constructions, constituent order, vocabulary, etc.) become manifest. (Not all of these are observable in English translations of those versions, of course.) As will be seen, there are some notable variants across these Georgian versions. In her post, Lied rightly stresses that “[t]here is still much research to be done on the reception history of 4 Ezra in the Christian East”. This research must include Old Georgian. I hope that the text sample given below, supplied with an English translation for those who do not read Georgian, will show that the Georgian witnesses to 4 Ezra certainly merit inclusion in any textual discussion of the book, whatever the language from which they were translated.
In the Georgian lectionary, the text below is read on Epiphany. In Tarchnišvili’s ed., the reading is introduced with the words ა : საკითხავი : ეზრა წინაჲსწარმეტყუელისაჲ :, “Reading I: Ezra the Prophet”. Barring punctuation and a minor orthographic difference (სიძულვილით instead of სიძულილით), the incipit and desinit of the passage (which is all Tarchnišvili gives) match JL. I have made a few changes to align the verses with JL; such places are marked with *. I have changed გან to -გან in Blake’s editions. First I give each text with an English translation, verse-by-verse, and then after that, for students of Old Georgian I supply the texts with notes on vocabulary and grammar at the first appearance of given forms.
